What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

IFS is an internal system, consisting of a Self and parts which organizes a person’s behavior, thought patterns, emotions and motivations. How many times have you said: “Part of me wants to do…and part of me wants to do…” These are your parts in action.

When there is trauma or other stressors, parts take on extreme roles and limit the ability of the Self to lead in an effective manner. The extreme roles of parts evolved in the service of emotional survival. When they are no longer adaptive, parts can be changed by working to give up extreme old roles, releasing the energy of the Self to lead effectively.
